Summary:
The author of “Ethics in an Online Environment”, Regina L. Garza Mitchell, tries to explain the ethics and moral codes of online learning in a college setting. Some of the problems that she brings up included trust, use of media, and discussion board. Many of on-campus faculty members distrust online instructors for reasons of qualifications or the lack of seeing them face-to-face. Also, they doubt the underlying abilities of the instructors to teach because more often then not they don’t follow the same training requirements. In addition to these problems, infringement also has a role in the construction and structure of an online lecture. Teachers must be careful not to infringe on copyrighted material and they should make every effort to assemble quality, original lessons. Lastly, she reviews the importance of monitoring of online discussion boards, not for censorship, but to keep ethical conduct flowing.
Response:
After reading about the techniques for how teachers post online classes, I find myself having a lot more respect for what they do. I used to believe that online classes were the easy way out of teaching. But it appears to be much more difficult to experiment in the new age with a new format and style of teaching.
Usefulness:
The overall usefulness of this article wasn’t that great. I don’t know exactly how to tie this in with my research but it was still somewhat interesting to read.
